    Living with AI personal assistant: an ethical appraisal.Lorraine K. C. Yeung, Cecilia S. Y. Tam, Sam S. S. Lau & Mandy M. Ko - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-16.
Mark Coeckelbergh (Int J Soc Robot 1:217–221, 2009) argues that robot ethics should investigate what interaction with robots can do to humans rather than focusing on the robot’s moral status. We should ask what robots do to our sociality and whether human–robot interaction can contribute to the human good and human flourishing. This paper extends Coeckelbergh’s call and investigate what it means to live with disembodied AI-powered agents. We address the following question: Can the human–AI interaction contribute to our moral (...)

    Exploration of Complex Dynamics for Cournot Oligopoly Game with Differentiated Products.S. S. Askar, Mona F. El-Wakeel & M. A. Alrodaini - 2018 - Complexity 2018:1-13.
This paper proposes a Cournot game organized by three competing firms adopting bounded rationality. According to the marginal profit in the past time step, each firm tries to update its production using local knowledge. In this game, a firm’s preference is represented by a utility function that is derived from a constant elasticity of substitution production function. The game is modeled by a 3-dimensional discrete dynamical system. The equilibria of the system are numerically studied to detect their complex characteristics due (...)

    “Allow natural death” versus “do not resuscitate”: three words that can change a life.S. S. Venneman, P. Narnor-Harris, M. Perish & M. Hamilton - 2008 - Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (1):2-6.
Physician-written “do not resuscitate” DNR orders elicit negative reactions from stakeholders that may decrease appropriate end-of-life care. The semantic significance of the phrase has led to a proposed replacement of DNR with “allow natural death” . Prior to this investigation, no scientific papers address the impact of such a change. Our results support this proposition due to increased likelihood of endorsement with the term AND.

  32. Psychology: The propaedeutic science.S. S. Stevens - 1936 - Philosophy of Science 3 (1):90-103.
Previous claims that psychology is propaedeutic to the other sciences have been met with enthusiastic indifference. Contributing to this indifference has been the fact that psychology, a young and unproved discipline which habitually borrowed the methods of the older sciences, has too frequently revised its notion as to its own nature and subject-matter. More important, however, has been the faith of the physical sciences in the absolute character of their own basic concepts: in the reality of Absolute Space and Absolute (...)

The phenomenon of laughter: mystery, news, affect.S. S. Bardinova - forthcoming - Vox Philosophical journal.
The article reviews various theories of laughter on the basis of their conventionally accepted classification. Their substantive intersections, especially significant for A. F. Losev and L. V. Karasev, are revealed. This leads us to the conclusion that there can be as many emotions and meanings expressed by laughter as there are hypotheses about what laughter points to. This conclusion drew our attention to the essential qualities of laughter, regardless of its objects, forms, and purposes: virtuality and eventuality. The theories of (...)

    Analysis of a Four-Firm Competition Based on a Generalized Bounded Rationality and Different Mechanisms.S. S. Askar & A. Al-Khedhairi - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-12.
This paper studies the dynamic characteristics of triopoly models that are constructed based on a 3-dimensional Cobb–Douglas utility function. The paper presents two parts. The first part introduces a competition among three rational firms on which their prices are isoelastic functions. The competition is described by a 3-dimensional discrete dynamical system. We examine the impact of rationality on the system’s steady state point. Studying the stability/instability of this point, which is Nash equilibrium and is unique in those models, is illustrated. Further Investigations on the Dynamics and Multistability Coexisted in a Memory-Based Cobweb Model.S. S. Askar - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-13.
Based on a nonlinear demand function and a market-clearing price, a cobweb model is introduced in this paper. A gradient mechanism that depends on the marginal profit is adopted to form the 1D discrete dynamic cobweb map. Analytical studies show that the map possesses four fixed points and only one attains the profit maximization. The stability/instability conditions for this fixed point are calculated and numerically studied. The numerical studies provide some insights about the cobweb map and confirm that this fixed (...)
